Prenatal Classes

The Sallye Jean Toniette, MD Women's Center at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital is designed to provide an exceptional birthing experience. From a variety of classes that will help prepare you and your family for the new baby to encouraging quiet times with you baby after the birth, our staff is ready to help welcome your new addition.

Whole-family support is also offered through several educational offerings designed not only for mothers, but fathers and siblings as well. Classes cover prenatal care, childbirth preparation, having a new baby in the family, parenting, and breastfeeding.

Online Childbirth Education

This online, interactive class is ideal for parents with time constraints, schedule conflicts, or those interested in a go-at-your-own-pace childbirth education resource. It includes information on topics such as: 

  • Prenatal and Postpartum Care
  • Labor and Birth
  • Breastfeeding
  • Formula Feeding
  • Newborn Care

Enrollment in the online childbirth education class includes one in-person session of our Preparing for Delivery and Breastfeeding Class. Cost for the class may apply. If you are interested in this course, please complete the online course registration form.

Preparing for Delivery & Breastfeeding Class

This class will prepare you for delivery, your hospital stay and getting to know you baby in the weeks to follow. These tips and preparation tools along with the basics of breastfeeding, will give you a great start with your baby beginning with your delivery experience and expectations. This session will also include time for one-on-one questions with a certified lactation counselor and childbirth educator for any specific concerns or interests.

Evidence is clear that certain techniques promote a strong bond between mother and baby and boost the health of the baby. The following techniques are discussed in the class:

  • Benefits of Skin-to-Skin Contact
  • Feeding Baby on Cue
  • Keeping Baby Close
  • Breastfeeding Education
  • Support Team
  • Comfort Measures

This class is held monthly on a Tuesday from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the WCCH North Conference Room near the Cypress Street Lobby. Class fee of $10 may apply.

Sibling Class

This class is a great resource for children to learn what to expect when a new baby enters the family. It is designed for first-time siblings ages 4-8. Available by appointment, topics include:

  • What happens when mom goes to the hospital
  • What to expect when the baby comes home
  • Exploring ways older siblings welcome the new baby
  • Exploring ways older siblings can help with the new baby
  • Tour of the Women's Center

Pre-Delivery Appointments

These individual appointments give you one-on-one time with a Women's Center nurse. This allows you to discuss your delivery expectations, take care of paperwork prior to your delivery and talk about any questions or concerns you may have. These appointments should be completed between weeks 35 and 37 of your pregnancy.

Tours

Tours of the Women's Center are available at any time with no appointment needed. These tours are also available after pre-delivery appointments and education classes.
